IP Address Lookup

Every device on the internet has an IP address, and that address can reveal a surprising amount — the approximate city, the internet provider, the time zone. This IP Address Lookup takes an IP (or your own, at the click of a button) and returns its geolocation and network details.

Developers use it to check where a server or visitor is located, support teams use it to verify a user's region, and the curious use it to see what their own connection reveals. It reports the city, region, and country, the ISP or organization behind the address, the time zone, the approximate latitude and longitude, and the postal code.

One thing to know: the lookup is performed by the ipapi.co service, so the IP address you enter is sent to that third party to be resolved.

The IP address you enter is sent to ipapi.co, which looks it up in a commercial geolocation database and returns an approximate location along with the network operator, autonomous system, and time zone.

The important thing to understand is what that database contains. There is nothing inherently geographic about an IP address — location is inferred from registry records, operator-published data, latency measurements, and commercial datasets. Accuracy is consequently variable rather than uniform.

Country-level accuracy is generally good, typically well above 95%. City-level accuracy is considerably weaker, often placing an address in the wrong city or at the geographic centre of a region as a fallback.

Several ordinary situations defeat IP geolocation entirely. A VPN or proxy reports its exit node's location, which is the point of using one. Corporate networks route through central gateways, so a remote worker appears at head office. Mobile carriers assign addresses from regional pools that may be hundreds of kilometres from the device. Satellite and some ISP infrastructure resolves to a national midpoint. And addresses are reassigned between customers, so a stale database entry describes a previous holder.

That combination is why IP geolocation is unsuitable as an authorisation or identity mechanism. It is reasonable for choosing a default language or currency, for coarse analytics, and as one weak signal in fraud scoring. It is not evidence of where somebody is, and treating it as such produces both false positives and easy circumvention.

A privacy note worth stating plainly: an IP address is personal data under the GDPR and comparable regimes, precisely because it can be linked to an individual. Looking up your own address to see what sites can infer is a reasonable use; building a profile of someone else's is not.
