Currency Converter
Convert currencies with live exchange rates
About the Currency Converter
Exchange rates change every day, and published static charts are outdated the moment they are printed. This converter fetches live rates directly from the Frankfurter open-source API, so the rate you see is what the market set today — not last week. Rates are sourced from the European Central Bank reference rates, which cover the major global currencies.
Travelers estimating how much local cash to carry, online shoppers comparing prices in foreign storefronts, freelancers invoicing international clients, and anyone receiving a wire transfer in a foreign currency all need a current rate rather than a memorized approximation. The searchable currency menus let you find any currency quickly by code (USD, EUR, LKR) or name, and the swap button reverses the direction in one click. If the network is unavailable, the converter shows a clear error rather than silently displaying a stale rate.
Because live rates are retrieved from Frankfurter's servers, your selected currency code leaves your browser in the API request. No personal data is transmitted — only the currency code you choose. The converter discloses this openly so you know exactly what data is and is not sent.
How to Use the Currency Converter
- Enter the amount you want to convert in the input field.
- Choose the source currency (the one you have) from the first dropdown — type to search by code or name.
- Choose the target currency (the one you want) from the second dropdown.
- The converted amount and current rate appear instantly. Use the swap button (⇄) to reverse the direction.
Why Use ToolForge’s Currency Converter
- Live rates from the Frankfurter API (European Central Bank reference rates) mean you see today's market rate, not a cached or static figure.
- Searchable dropdowns let you find currencies by typing a code (LKR, JPY) or a partial name, covering 30+ major global currencies.
- The swap button reverses source and target in one click, making it easy to check the rate in both directions.
- Honest disclosure: the converter clearly states that your currency code is sent to api.frankfurter.app to retrieve rates, so there are no surprises about what leaves your browser.
Frequently Asked Questions
How current are the exchange rates?
Rates come from the Frankfurter API, which publishes European Central Bank reference rates. ECB rates are updated on business days, typically around 16:00 CET. Weekend and holiday rates remain at the last published value. For forex trading where seconds matter, use a brokerage platform; for everyday conversions, these rates are accurate and current.
Does the converter send my data anywhere?
It sends only the base currency code (e.g., "USD") to api.frankfurter.app to retrieve the latest rates. No amount you type, no personal information, and no history is transmitted. The Frankfurter API is open-source and does not require an account or API key.
What do I see if I am offline or the API is unavailable?
The converter shows a clear error message: "Unable to fetch exchange rates. Please check your connection." It does not display stale data as if it were current. Reload the page once you have connectivity to fetch fresh rates.
Why might the rate differ from my bank or card rate?
Banks and card networks apply a spread (markup) on top of the mid-market rate and may add foreign transaction fees. This converter shows the mid-market ECB reference rate, which is roughly the rate you see on financial news sites — the "true" rate before any fees are applied.
