Repeated multiplication, and what negatives mean
Raising a base to a positive whole exponent is repeated multiplication, and the tool shows the expanded form so the structure is visible rather than implied. Large results are additionally expressed in scientific notation, since exponentiation reaches unwieldy magnitudes quickly.
Negative and zero exponents are not multiplication at all, and both follow from one rule: subtracting exponents divides. A base raised to zero is one, because dividing anything by itself gives one. A negative exponent is the reciprocal of the positive power, because dividing past zero continues the pattern downward.
