Lorem Ipsum Generator

Placeholder text is a measuring instrument. You reach for it to find out whether a card still looks right with four lines in it instead of two, whether a heading wraps, whether a meta description survives being cut off at 155 characters. So the useful question is not "give me some Latin" but "give me this much text, in this shape" — and that is what this generator is built around.

Ask for words, sentences, paragraphs, bullet points, or a whole article with a title, section headings and a list. Or switch on the budget and name an exact figure: 60 characters for a page title, 155 for a meta description, 160 for an SMS, 280 for a short post. The generator fills the number and then trims back to a whole word, so the result never goes over and never ends halfway through a word.

Three vocabularies are available. Classic Latin is the traditional choice and looks unmistakably like placeholder. Plain English is there because Latin quietly hides problems: it has no long compound words, no awkward proper nouns, and a word-length distribution that flatters a layout. Product-and-interface vocabulary suits dashboard and marketing mockups where the copy will eventually be about plans, permissions and pipelines.

Every result comes from a seed that is shown on screen and can be edited. The same seed always produces the same text, so a mockup is reproducible — write the seed in the file name and the identical placeholder comes back next month. Output as plain text, Markdown, HTML or JSON, optionally with emphasis and links sprinkled through it so a stylesheet actually gets exercised.

Placeholder prose is rarely pasted into a blank page. Article mode produces a document rather than a blob — a title, then sections each with a heading and one or two paragraphs, plus a bullet list — which is the shape a CMS template or a documentation theme actually has to render. Turning on emphasis and links sprinkles bold, italics and anchors through the prose, because a paragraph with no inline elements in it does not tell you whether your link colour and your bold weight are right.

The same generated document can come out four ways. Plain text for a design tool. Markdown for a CMS or a README. HTML for a template, with a choice of wrapper tag and whether list items are indented. JSON for a fixture file, as an array of typed blocks you can loop over in a test.

Underneath all of it is a seed. Because generation is a pure function of the settings and that seed, the output updates live as you drag a slider instead of reshuffling every word on every frame, and any result can be recovered exactly by typing its seed back in.

A character limit is a hard edge, and text that lands one character past it is no more useful than text that misses by fifty. So budget mode generates past the target and then trims back: it adds words while they fit, skips any word too long for the space remaining, stops when nothing more fits, and closes the sentence with a full stop that is counted in the total.

The result is text that ends on a whole word every time. If the budget is so small that not even one word plus a full stop fits, nothing is generated and the tool says why rather than handing back a fragment of a word. Word budgets work the same way and are exact: ask for fifty-five words and you get fifty-five.

The counter beside the output reports the emitted text, not the request — characters with and without spaces, words, sentences, paragraphs and reading time — so what you see is what a CMS field will count when you paste it in.

The case for Lorem Ipsum is that meaningless text lets you judge typography, spacing and hierarchy without being pulled into reading, and that nobody will mistake it for approved copy. Both are true, and both are why it has survived since the 1500s.

The case against is that real content has properties Latin does not. Headlines are short and awkward. Names are long and refuse to break. One paragraph is two words and the next is twenty. The actual message may simply not fit the space the design allocated for it. A layout tuned against evenly-shaped Latin routinely breaks the first time real copy arrives, which is why content-first design became the preferred practice.

The practical middle path is to use filler that is roughly the right length and shape, and to test the extremes on purpose — the longest plausible headline, the shortest, the empty state. That is why the English and product vocabularies exist here rather than Latin alone, and why the budget mode is worth reaching for: it lets you generate exactly the awkward length you are worried about. One caution remains whichever you pick — placeholder text has a habit of escaping into production, so a search for "lorem" before launch is a cheap thing to add to a checklist.
