Four summaries of one dataset

The tool parses your comma-separated values and reports four different descriptions of them. The mean sums everything and divides by the count. The median sorts the values and takes the middle one, averaging the two central values when the count is even. The mode is whatever appears most often, and there may be several or none. Choosing which average to quote

The mean uses every value, which makes it efficient and also makes it vulnerable: a single extreme figure drags it. That is why household income is conventionally reported as a median. A small number of very high earners pulls the mean well above what a typical household actually receives, and quoting the mean in that context is misleading even though it is arithmetically correct.

The median is robust to outliers and is the better choice for skewed data or where extreme values are suspect. Its weakness is that it ignores magnitude — it knows only ordering, so it cannot register how far away the extremes are.

The mode is the only one of the three that works on categorical data, where there is nothing to add or sort: the most common blood type or the most frequent response to a survey question.
