Converting a time into a pace

The calculation reduces your hours, minutes, and seconds to a single total in seconds, divides by the distance to get seconds per kilometre, then converts that back into minutes and seconds for display. Working in total seconds throughout avoids the arithmetic errors that come from carrying minutes and seconds separately.

Pace rather than speed is the runner's unit because it is directly actionable. Knowing you are running at 5:00 per kilometre tells you immediately what each remaining kilometre will cost you, whereas 12 km/h requires a further calculation to be useful mid-race.

Why a race rarely runs at even pace

An average pace is not a prescription. Predicting one distance from another is a common use for pace figures and needs a nonlinear model rather than a straight multiplication.
