TCP vs. UDP: What This Tool Can (and Can't) Check
Most services you would want to test — web servers, SSH, databases — run over TCP, and that is what this checker is built for: it probes TCP-style reachability by attempting an HTTP or HTTPS connection to the host and port. It cannot test UDP ports at all. Browsers are not allowed to open raw TCP or UDP sockets, so there is simply no way for an in-browser tool to send a UDP datagram or complete a low-level TCP handshake — it can only make a web-style request and see whether it succeeds.
In practice: checking port 443 (HTTPS, a TCP port) works well, because a browser speaks exactly that protocol and gets a clear answer. A UDP-based service — DNS on port 53, or a game server that communicates over UDP — cannot be verified here, and neither can a TCP service that does not speak HTTP, which may report as closed even when it is open.
