One relationship, rearranged three ways
Velocity, distance, and time are bound by a single equation, so knowing any two gives you the third. The mode selector picks which one you are solving for and the tool rearranges accordingly — there is no separate formula for each, just the same relationship divided differently.
Whatever units you choose on the inputs, the calculation is performed internally in metres and seconds and converted back for display. That is what lets you mix a distance in miles with a time in minutes and still get a sensible answer in kilometres per hour.
Strictly this computes average velocity over the whole interval, which is distance divided by elapsed time. It says nothing about what happened in between: a car that stops at two sets of traffic lights and one that holds a steady speed produce identical figures if they cover the same ground in the same time.

Speed, velocity, and average versus instantaneous
