Hydration needs are personal — they depend on your body size and how much you move — yet most advice defaults to a flat "eight glasses a day." This calculator gives a tailored estimate, combining a baseline from your body weight with an added amount for the time you spend active.

How this estimate is built

Two components are added. A baseline of 35 millilitres for each kilogram of body weight covers ordinary daily losses through urine, breathing, and skin. On top of that, roughly 11.8 millilitres is added for each minute of exercise you enter, standing in for sweat losses during activity.

Scaling on body weight rather than issuing a flat figure is the more defensible approach, because a 55 kg person and a 100 kg person genuinely do not need the same volume. The 35 ml/kg baseline sits within the range commonly cited for healthy adults; the exercise increment is a broad average rather than a measured sweat rate.

The figure is total water, not glasses to drink. Food contributes meaningfully — typically a fifth to a third of intake, and considerably more on a diet rich in fruit and vegetables — as do tea, coffee, milk, and juice. Caffeinated drinks count towards the total; their mild diuretic effect does not offset the fluid they deliver.

Daily water (ml) = (weight in kg × 35) + (exercise minutes × 11.8)

For sessions beyond an hour, or in heat, electrolytes matter as well as volume.

Drinking far more than you need is not harmless. Overconsumption can dilute blood sodium — hyponatraemia — which is dangerous and has occurred in endurance events. And if you have kidney disease, heart failure, or liver disease, fluid intake is often deliberately restricted on medical advice; in that case follow your clinician's instruction and disregard this figure entirely.
