HEIC vs JPG: What's the Difference?

Every iPhone photo is one or the other, decided by a setting most people never open. This is the actual trade-off behind that setting: what each format buys you, and — more usefully than "which is better" — which situation calls for which.

Neither format is a mistake. HEIC is the newer, more efficient choice for storage; JPG is the format that opens everywhere without a second thought. The right answer depends entirely on what you do with your photos after you take them.

What the size advantage actually is

HEIC's whole reason for existing is storing a photo in less space without a visible drop in quality. Apple's own support documentation is direct about the claim and equally direct about not attaching a number to it: "HEIF and HEVC offer better compression than JPEG and H.264, so they use less storage space on your devices and iCloud Photos, while preserving the same visual quality." No specific ratio is given, and figures repeated elsewhere online vary — which is exactly why this comparison does not repeat one either.

The mechanism behind the saving is real and specific, though. JPEG's compression, standardised decades ago, is based on the discrete cosine transform — dividing an image into blocks and discarding fine detail the eye is least likely to notice. HEIC instead uses the same intra-frame compression technique HEVC video applies to a single frame, which captures detail more efficiently for a given file size. That is a genuine technical improvement, not a marketing distinction.

What that saving means in practice: more photos fit in the same iCloud storage tier, backups take less time over the same connection, and a phone with the same storage capacity holds a noticeably larger camera roll.

What the compatibility cost actually is

JPEG's advantage is not a feature so much as an accumulated fact: it has been the default photo format on essentially everything for decades, and every piece of software written since has assumed it will encounter one. There is no "does this open a JPG" question left to ask.

HEIC's compatibility depends on whether the receiving device or software has an HEVC decoder — licensed technology that rolled out on a different timeline per platform. Apple's own ecosystem has had it since 2017; Android gained native platform support in 2018, per Google's developer documentation, though individual manufacturer software varies in how well it uses that; Windows has never shipped a decoder by default and needs a codec installed from the Microsoft Store.

That gap shows up constantly in ordinary use: a HEIC attached to an email opens fine for another iPhone user and shows nothing at all for someone on Windows without the extension installed, and many upload forms and older third-party software reject the format outright regardless of what the recipient's own device can display.

Two differences that rarely come up

HEIC can hold more than one image in a single file. A HEIC container genuinely supports storing a burst sequence or an auxiliary image — a depth map, say — alongside the main photo, all in one file. JPG has no equivalent; each file is exactly one image, always.

Neither format supports transparency. Both are built for photographs, and neither has an alpha channel. If you need a transparent background, you are looking at PNG or WebP, not either of these — the wider format comparison covers that ground properly.

Which to actually shoot

Keep shooting HEIC (the default) if: storage matters to you — a smaller camera roll, faster iCloud backups, more room before you need to buy additional storage — and you are willing to convert individual photos to JPG on the rare occasion you need to share one to something that does not read HEIC directly. This is genuinely the better default for most iPhone owners, which is presumably why Apple made it one.

Switch to JPG (Most Compatible) if: you routinely send photos to people on Windows or older Android devices who cannot install anything, you work with photo software that does not yet handle HEIC reliably, or you would simply rather never think about the format question again. The setting change takes one minute and affects only photos taken afterward.

There is no wrong choice here, and the two are not really in competition on quality — they are trading storage efficiency against universal compatibility, and which one you need more of is a personal, entirely reasonable thing to decide either way.

Is HEIC actually higher quality than JPG?

Not necessarily at a given file size, and not in a way most people would notice either way at typical viewing sizes. The real difference is efficiency: HEIC can store a comparable-looking image in a smaller file, which is a storage advantage rather than a visible quality one.

Does converting a HEIC photo to JPG make it worse?

There is some quality loss inherent to any lossy re-encoding, but at a reasonable quality setting — 90%, say — it is very difficult to see at normal viewing sizes. The bigger practical change is compatibility, gained, not quality, lost.

Why is my HEIC photo so much smaller than the JPG I converted it to?

Because HEIC's compression is more efficient than JPEG's at a comparable visual quality, so converting typically produces a larger file for essentially the same picture. This is expected, not a sign anything went wrong in the conversion.

Should I switch my iPhone to JPG permanently?

Only if compatibility matters more to you than storage space — for instance if you frequently share directly with people on Windows or older Android phones. Otherwise, keeping HEIC and converting individual photos when you actually need to share one gives you the storage benefit most of the time with no real downside.

Can I have both formats — HEIC on my phone, JPG for sharing?

Yes, and this is what most people end up doing without thinking of it that way: shoot HEIC by default, then convert the specific photos you need to share to JPG at that moment, rather than switching the camera setting.

The short version

HEIC trades universal compatibility for storage efficiency; JPG makes the opposite trade. Neither is objectively better — HEIC is the sensible default for a phone you use daily, and JPG is what you convert to the moment compatibility actually matters. Most people are best served keeping HEIC and converting individual photos as needed, rather than deciding the question permanently in either direction.
